The surfing competition at the AIMS Games got off to a tricky start on Monday 7 September 2026, with the weather not at its best at Mount Maunganui Beach.
Despite the conditions, 87 competitors turned up ready to give it their best shot on the popular local beach.
The surfers stayed positive and confident throughout the day.
Because the surf has been poor lately, most competitors only managed about two weeks of training before AIMS 2026.
That makes their effort even more impressive, given how high the competition level is.
Many of the surfers said their families were their biggest motivation, helping to encourage them to be the best sportspeople they can be.
Even with the rough weather, the surfers showed plenty of determination on day one at Mount Maunganui Beach.
