Fifty-nine teams took to Blake Park on Monday 7 September 2026 for the opening day of the AIMS Games rugby sevens.
Players and supporters cheered each other on all day, with every team playing two or three games, each lasting 14 minutes.
Pool games will continue from Monday through to Wednesday, giving each team a chance to show what they can do.
On Thursday, teams will be sorted and ranked by ability, then placed into their own mini tournaments.
Friday will bring the grand finals, when the very best teams battle it out for the AIMS Games crown.
A student from Sacred Heart College in Auckland shared some advice for anyone keen to try sevens rugby.
“Be confident. Don’t be scared to give it a go,” they said.
The student said they, like most of their teammates, enjoy playing team sports more than individual ones.
With three more days of pool play still to come, there’s plenty more rugby to be played at Blake Park this week.
