Some of the world’s top surfers have arrived in Raglan for one of the biggest events in New Zealand surf history.
For 11 days, competitors will take on the famous waves at Manu Bay as part of the World Surf League Championship Tour. It is the fourth stop on the tour, and the first time New Zealand has ever hosted a combined men’s and women’s Championship Tour event. Thousands of spectators are expected to make the trip to the small Waikato town to watch.
Among those competing are two-time Olympian Billy Stairmand and 15-year-old Alani Morse, who is from Raglan itself. Morse earned her spot through a wildcard entry and says the experience has been incredible.
“I’m just thrilled to be here. I’m just soaking it all in and learning as I go,” she said.
Local surf instructor Pipiri Kelly has surfed Manu Bay his whole life and says watching the world’s best ride those same waves is something special. “It’s very inspiring to see the lines they take and what they’re actually able to do,” he said.
The event is also great news for local businesses. Raglan Roast owner Esther Keown says the surge of visitors will bring a real boost to the town, with locals renting out their homes and cafes preparing to serve big crowds.
