Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen was punished for using bad language during a press conference.

The FIA, the sport’s governing body, ruled that Verstappen would need to complete some “public interest” work as a result, though the exact task has not yet been decided. This came after Verstappen swore while describing his car’s performance at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Verstappen argued that the word he used was common in speech, especially since English isn’t his first language. However, the FIA emphasised that as a role model, Verstappen should be careful with his words in public. Verstappen also expressed his disagreement with strict rules on swearing, saying that adrenaline can cause athletes in many sports to say things that wouldn’t normally be broadcast.
