The Springboks have beaten the All Blacks 33-26 in a thrilling rugby Test at Cape Town’s DHL Stadium, levelling the series at 1-1.
The match kicked off with two passenger jets flying extremely low over the stadium, a South African tradition watched by more than 56,000 fans.
The Springboks scored first through midfielder Jesse Kriel, before the All Blacks hit back with a try to halfback Cam Roigard.
Springboks captain Siya Kolisi, returning from a hamstring injury, scored a crucial try just before halftime to help his side lead 24-14 at the break — though he only played a couple of minutes into the second half before having to leave the field.
The All Blacks fought hard after the break, with tries to Damian McKenzie, Leroy Carter and Ardie Savea, but they could never quite close the gap.
A late break by All Blacks wing Will Jordan was stopped just in time, and the Springboks held on for the win.
All Blacks captain Ardie Savea said the team was proud of their effort despite the loss. “We stuck in there, we fought, but we came up short,” he said.
All Blacks coach Rennie, suffering his first defeat in charge, said there was still plenty to feel positive about. “We’re confident we can bounce back,” he said.
The two teams will now meet in Johannesburg next weekend for the third and deciding Test of the series.
