Kane Williamson has retired from international cricket, New Zealand Cricket announced. The decision is effective immediately, which means he will not play in the Black Caps’ current Test series in England. Williamson said he had thought about the decision for some time and felt now was the right moment to stop.
Williamson played international cricket for New Zealand for 16 years. Across 378 games, he became the Black Caps’ all-time leading run scorer with 19,346 runs. He also scored 48 centuries and six double-centuries, showing his skill and patience as a batter.
During his career, Williamson helped lead New Zealand to two ICC World Cup finals, three semi-finals, and victory in the first ICC World Test Championship in 2021. He was named ICC Cricketer of the Year in 2015 and Test Player of the Year in 2019. He also won the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal four times.
Williamson said he was hopeful about the future of the Black Caps. Coach Rob Walter praised him as a special player, teammate, leader and ambassador for cricket. A replacement player for the current Test series will be confirmed later.
