New Zealand’s White Ferns were knocked out of the Women’s Twenty20 World Cup after losing to England by nine wickets. The match was played at The Oval on Saturday. New Zealand had needed to beat unbeaten England to reach the semifinals.
Earlier in the day, Ireland had given New Zealand a surprise chance by defeating the West Indies. That result meant the White Ferns still had control of their own future. New Zealand chose to bat first and scored 163-6. Izzy Gaze and Melie Kerr shared a strong 70-run opening stand.
England chased the target with 16 balls left, reaching 164-1. Danni Wyatt-Hodge led the innings with 89 not out from 53 balls. She hit 15 boundaries and one six in a powerful performance. She also became the tournament’s leading run-scorer and broke the record for most runs in a single Women’s T20 World Cup.
The defeat ended New Zealand’s title defence after three losses in five group matches. It also closed the international careers of Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates and Lea Tahuhu. Together, the three players made nearly 900 appearances for New Zealand. England moved on strongly, while New Zealand’s World Cup campaign came to an end.
