Smurfs set new world record in France

On Sunday, May 19, the town of Landerneau in Brittany, France, set a new Guinness World Record by gathering 3,076 people dressed as Smurfs. The event broke the previous record of 2,762 Smurfs, which had been held by a group in Germany since 2019.

This was Landerneau’s third try at beating the record. With help from Paramount Pictures—just before the new Smurfs movie arrives in theatres on July 18—the town finally succeeded. Everyone taking part wore the familiar blue skin paint, white hats, and pants to match the look of the famous cartoon characters.

The Smurfs were first created in 1958 by Belgian artist Pierre Culliford, who used the pen name “Peyo.” In France, the little blue creatures are known as “Schtroumpfs.”

The cheerful event turned the whole town into a sea of blue and brought smiles to both kids and adults. Landerneau is now officially home to the biggest Smurf gathering the world has ever seen!
