Netball New Zealand has announced that a two-point shot will be introduced in the 2025 ANZ Premiership, adding a new challenge for players and excitement for fans.

The rule will allow long-range shots to earn two points in the final five minutes of each quarter. This change follows similar moves in Australia’s Suncorp Super Netball and the UK’s Super League.

Jennie Wyllie, chief executive of Netball New Zealand, said the changes aim to keep the league competitive and engaging. “We believe this will bring an added layer of excitement and drama to matches,” she said. “These adjustments are about evolving with the sport while preserving its fundamental principles.”

The ANZ Premiership’s two-point zone will start at 3.5 meters from the goal post, similar to the FAST5 format. This differs slightly from the Australian and UK leagues, where the zone begins at 3 meters.

Other rule changes for the season include a designated coach’s box for better team communication, one time-out per team per half, and umpires wearing microphones to broadcast decisions live in the stadium.

The 2025 ANZ Premiership season kicks off on May 10.
