The Hurricanes won the Super Rugby final in Wellington on Saturday night, beating the Chiefs 60-5 in a stunning performance. The home team scored nine tries and gave the Chiefs very few chances throughout the match. It was a record-breaking night in front of a full and excited stadium.
The Hurricanes led 29-0 at half-time, which was the biggest half-time lead ever seen in a Super Rugby final. Fehi Fineanganofo scored two tries, taking his season total to 17, a competition record. His teammate Josh Moorby also reached 17 tries for the season.
Many Hurricanes players impressed, including Asafo Aumua, Peter Lakai, Warner Dearns, Jordie Barrett, Callum Harkin and Ruben Love. Love had an excellent match, scoring 25 points and helping his team control the game. The Hurricanes used clever attacking play, even though strong winds made conditions difficult.
The victory gave the Hurricanes their second championship title, ten years after their first. It was a painful result for the Chiefs, who have now lost four grand finals in a row. After the match, Hurricanes captain Du’Plessis Kirifi said the team had been building towards this success for several years.
