England defeated New Zealand by 115 runs on Day 4 of the first cricket test at Lord’s, in London. The win came before lunch, as New Zealand were bowled out for 138 while chasing a target that had looked very difficult from the start. England’s victory gave them a strong beginning to their summer test series.
New Zealand began the day on 55-5 and still needed 254 runs to win. However, England’s bowlers took the final five wickets in less than two hours. Fast bowler Gus Atkinson was England’s best bowler in the innings, taking 5 wickets for 30 runs on a pitch that helped the bowlers. The match ended when Atkinson bowled Matt Henry, knocking over the middle stump.
Glenn Phillips was New Zealand’s top scorer, finishing on 44 not out. Devon Conway and Phillips had given New Zealand a little hope with a 53-run partnership, but Conway’s wicket started another collapse. England captain Ben Stokes said his team handled the difficult conditions better than New Zealand.
Several England players stood out during the match. Emilio Gay scored 57 in the second innings on his test debut, the highest individual score by any player in the match. Ollie Robinson took seven wickets across the test and was named man of the match. The second test of the three-match series will be played at The Oval from June 17.
