New Zealand’s Black Ferns came from behind to beat Canada 36-14 in their Pacific Four Series match in Kansas City today.
The game began late because of lightning, which caused a three-hour delay. Canada led 14-5 at half-time, but the Black Ferns turned the match around in the second half. Their win also helped them get revenge after losing to Canada in a World Cup semi-final last year.
The Black Ferns were much stronger after the break, scoring five tries in the second half. Their running and passing were fast and exciting, which made it hard for Canada to defend. New Zealand kept pushing forward and slowly took control of the match. It was a big change from the first half, when Canada had looked more confident.
The Black Ferns took the lead for the first time in the 61st minute. Kaipo Olsen-Baker got the ball down near the try line while surrounded by players. At first, the referee said the ball had been held up, which meant no try. But after a check from the Television Match Official, the decision was changed and the try was awarded.
Only two minutes later, Maama Mo’onia Vaipulu scored another brilliant try. From then on, Canada struggled under the pressure as New Zealand finished the game strongly.
Last weekend, the Black Ferns beat the United States 48-15, while Canada defeated Australia 24-0.
