The ANZ Premiership netball season started with exciting matches and powerful performances across New Zealand over the weekend. Last year’s finalists, Central Pulse and Northern Mystics, both made strong statements with big wins in their opening games.

On Saturday in Palmerston North, the Pulse defeated the Magic 57–44. It was a special win, as it marked goal attack Tiana Metuarau’s 100th game for the Pulse. Amelia Walmsley was a standout shooter, scoring 39 of the team’s goals. The Pulse started fast, leading 15–6 by the end of the first quarter.

The Mystics also got off to a winning start on Sunday, beating the Stars 71–55 in Auckland. This was despite missing star shooter Grace Nweke, who is now playing in Australia. Australian import Donnell Wallam impressed fans by scoring 52 goals in her first game for the Mystics.

The Stars had a tough time with injuries. They lost defenders Greer Sinclair and Kate Burley, as well as shooter Charlie Bell, all during the match.

In another close contest, the Tactix beat the Southern Steel 57–50 in Christchurch. This match also marked the first time the Hutton Family Trophy was played for, honoring two former Canterbury netballers. The Tactix pulled away in the final quarter, thanks to strong play from Martina Salmon and defender Jane Watson.

This season also introduced the “Super Shot” rule, allowing two-point goals in the last five minutes of each quarter. Some players made good use of it, especially early in matches, while others are still adjusting.

On Saturday morning, a class visited the local reserve to record birdlife along a short walking track. They noticed that the most common birds were kererū and tūī, especially near the flowering trees. The students also saw that areas with more native plants had more bird activity than the open grassy spaces. By the end of the walk, they had not only counted birds, but also learned how restoring native plants can support local wildlife. One student wrote in her notes that the reserve was “a lively place because the habitat was improving”.
