FIFA bans refillable bottles

FIFA has banned fans from bringing refillable water bottles into World Cup stadiums. The decision affects the tournament’s 16 stadiums across North America. It was announced shortly before the World Cup was due to begin.

Earlier rules had said fans could bring a clear reusable bottle up to one litre. The updated rules now say reusable water bottles may not be brought into stadiums. FIFA said the change was made for safety, because bottles could be thrown.

Some fan groups criticised the decision. An English fan group said supporters had been told free water would be available at stadiums. The group said the change was strange, especially because hot weather is expected.

FIFA said it would help fans stay cool with hydration stations, misting stations, fans and cooling tents. Temperatures of 32 degrees Celsius or more are expected in some host cities. FIFA has also planned drinks breaks for players during matches.
