Tadej Pogacar has won his fifth Tour de France title, matching the record for the most victories in the famous cycling race. The 27-year-old Slovenian finished the race in Paris after three weeks of racing and won by 6 minutes and 26 seconds. His victory means he joins five-time champions Eddy Merckx, Miguel Indurain, Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault in cycling history. Pogacar said he was “speechless” and called the achievement “incredible”.
Throughout this year’s Tour, Pogacar impressed fans with brave attacks in the mountains, five stage wins and calm performances under pressure. He has now finished on the podium in all seven Tour de France races he has entered. Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel finished second overall, while Pogacar’s teammate Isaac Del Toro from Mexico came third in his first Tour. Pogacar also wished his main rival, Jonas Vingegaard, well after the Danish rider crashed out during the race.
The final stage took place in Paris and included three exciting climbs through the Montmartre district before finishing on the famous Champs-Élysées. Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel won the stage after a powerful sprint to the finish, while Pogacar finished 30th after trying to keep up. Pogacar said he now wants to enjoy his success before deciding on his next goal. He may race in the Spanish Vuelta later this year, but has not yet made a decision.
