Last night, the Supreme Halberg Award Ceremony was held in Auckland. The Halberg Awards is an annual ceremony celebrating New Zealand’s top athletes, teams, and coaches for their outstanding achievements in sports.
Ko’s incredible year included winning a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics, completing her set of Olympic medals, and victory in the British Open at St Andrews, the historic home of golf.
Other top winners included high jumper Hamish Kerr, who was named Sportsman of the Year after earning gold at the Paris Olympics and the World Indoor Championships. Paralympian Anna Grimaldi, New Zealand’s only Paralympic gold medallist from Paris, won the Para Athlete of the Year award.
In team sports, the New Zealand Women’s K4 sprint kayak crew made history as the first non-European team to win Olympic gold. Their achievement earned them the Team of the Year award. Their coach, Gordon Walker, was also recognised as Coach of the Year.
Young footballer Tyler Bindon was named Emerging Talent, and tennis player Marcus Daniell received the Sport New Zealand Leadership Award.
