LeBron James chooses Philadelphia for Final NBA chapter

Basketball superstar LeBron James has announced that he will join the Philadelphia 76ers for what he says will be the final chapter of his remarkable NBA career. The 41-year-old revealed his decision after weeks of speculation about where he would play in his record-breaking 24th NBA season. James explained that his choice was not about earning the biggest salary or being close to family. Instead, he said he wanted one last opportunity to compete for an NBA championship with a team that has not won the title for 43 years.

James spent the past eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, helping them win the 2020 NBA championship. Before that, he played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat, winning four championships during his career. In a series of social media posts, James thanked his former teams and supporters while saying he was excited to begin a new journey in Philadelphia. Reports from ESPN say he has agreed to a two-year contract worth US$8 million, with an option that could allow him to decide whether to continue after the first season.

The Philadelphia 76ers already have a talented squad, including Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and recently acquired Jaylen Brown. Many basketball experts believe James’ arrival greatly improves the team’s chances of winning the NBA title. Philadelphia reached the 2026 playoffs but was eliminated by the eventual champion New York Knicks in the second round. Several other teams, including Cleveland, Miami, Golden State and Minnesota, were also believed to be interested in signing James before he made his final decision.

James admitted he seriously considered retirement after the Lakers’ playoff exit earlier this year. After taking time away from basketball, he realised he still loved the game and believed he could continue performing at a high level. Last season he averaged more than 20 points per game and earned a record 22nd consecutive NBA All-Star selection.
