Wimbledon introduces line-calling technology

Wimbledon, the world’s oldest Grand Slam tennis tournament, is making a big change.

Starting in 2025, the event will replace its traditional line judges with electronic line-calling technology. This system will determine whether shots are “in” or “out” using advanced ball-tracking, aiming to make calls more accurate.

The decision follows tests during the 2024 tournament and builds on technology already used in recent years. Sally Bolton, the head of the All England Club, said the change would offer players the same conditions seen in other major tennis events like the US Open. While some fans might miss the iconic line judges in their smart uniforms, Wimbledon leaders say they are trying to balance tradition with modern improvements.

With this shift, the French Open will be the only Grand Slam still using human line judges. Wimbledon also announced that the men’s and women’s singles finals will start later in the afternoon to attract larger audiences.
