Toxic algae warnings in rivers

Families in the Hutt and Wairarapa areas are being warned to stay out of some rivers because dangerous toxic algae has been found there.

Red alerts have been placed at the Hutt River at Silverstream, the Waipoua River at Colombo Road, and the Ruamahanga River at Double Bridges and Te Ore Ore. Greater Wellington Regional Council says no one should swim at these spots, and dogs should be kept well away from the water.

The algae is especially dangerous because it makes a poison that attacks the nervous system. This can make people very unwell, and it can kill dogs if they swallow even a small amount. Officials say the risk is worse during warm, dry weather, because the algae can break away from the riverbed and collect along the edge of the water.

That means it can be easier to touch or accidentally pick up, especially for dogs. Council advisor Penny Fairbrother said dogs are at greatest risk because they are often attracted by the smell and may try to eat it. She warned that a piece as small as a 50-cent coin could be enough to kill a dog.

The council is checking popular swimming places every week and wants people to look at the LAWA website before visiting rivers in the Wellington region. Anyone who feels sick after touching algae should see a doctor or call Healthline on 0800 611 116. Anyone who thinks their dog has eaten toxic algae should take it to a vet straight away.
