A bakery in Christchurch sold out of its brand new horse meat pies on the very first day they went on sale.
Hoon Hay Kiwi Bakery had only announced the pies on social media two days earlier, before quickly running out.
“What an incredible response!” the bakery wrote online. “Thank you all for your tremendous support and for showing so much love for our new Horse Pie!”
The bakery sold three flavours: plain horse, horse and cheese, and curried horse.
Staff member Dany told the NZ Herald the response was a surprise, saying a Facebook post about the pies had gone viral, attracting more than 400 comments.
Some people didn’t like the idea, saying horses are companion animals that people bond with rather than eat.
Others pointed out that eating horse meat has been part of some cultures for around 1000 years.
Dany said the debate actually helped the bakery, with many people visiting for the first time after seeing the post.
The bakery told fans not to worry, as more horse pies would be back on the shelves the very next day.
