Team New Zealand claimed victory in the America’s Cup preliminary regatta in Barcelona, overcoming a tough final race against Luna Rossa. Despite losing their first race of the series earlier in the day to American Magic, Team New Zealand had already secured a spot in the final.

The final race was intense, with Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa battling in lighter winds. Team New Zealand, led by skipper Peter Burling, started strong and took the lead. Luna Rossa was penalised twice during the race, but they kept the competition close. At the final mark, Team New Zealand was just 11 seconds ahead, but they managed to extend their lead and win by 34 seconds.

After the race, Burling expressed his relief and excitement, acknowledging the challenges they faced due to tricky sailing conditions. He admitted that the team made several mistakes but was thrilled to come out on top despite the difficulties.

The victory sets a positive tone for Team New Zealand as they prepare for the America’s Cup Challenger Series, starting on August 29.
