Steps, the beloved 12-year-old tabby cat from Tauranga Hospital, was found safe less than two days after he went missing. He had last been seen in the hospital carpark on Monday night, sparking a huge search by staff, visitors and thousands of his followers on social media.
The breakthrough came when a woman living in Gate Pā posted on a Lost and Found Pets Facebook page, asking if anyone recognised a very friendly cat that had turned up at her home. She said the tabby had broken through her cat door and made himself comfortable on her bed overnight, quickly trying to adopt her as his new owner.
Steps’ caregiver, Karla Horn, spotted the post and recognised the cat straight away. She drove to the property and was reunited with the wandering feline, much to the relief of the whole community.
News of Steps’ safe return spread quickly, with the Facebook post attracting more than 1600 reactions. Hospital staff and visitors, who had grown fond of Steps’ friendly visits over the years, were delighted to hear that one of New Zealand’s most recognisable cats was finally back home.
