Giant rubber band ball breaks world record

A man from Detroit in the United States has made the world’s biggest rubber band ball after more than 10 years of work.

Claude P. Moore’s ball weighs 11,578 pounds. That’s about 5,250 kilograms, roughly as heavy as an elephant.

He started making rubber band balls while waiting at his many doctor’s appointments for haemophilia. This is a blood disorder where the blood doesn’t clot (thicken) properly, so cuts and bruises take longer to stop bleeding.

In 2015, some of his workmates challenged him to make a really big one.

The ball grew so large that he had to move it out of his garage and into its own storage unit.

In August, Mr Moore and dozens of helpers rolled the ball out, and a crane lifted it so it could be taken to Belle Isle to be weighed.

A judge from Guinness World Records watched the weighing and confirmed it was the world’s largest rubber band ball.

The old record belonged to Joel Waul from Florida, whose ball weighed 9,032 pounds (about 4,100 kilograms) when he finished it in 2008.

Mr Moore’s ball beat it by more than 1,100 kilograms.
