Guatemala cooks up giant record-breaking salad

Chefs in Guatemala have made the biggest fiambre salad ever recorded, using more than 4,000 pounds of meat and vegetables — that’s heavier than a giraffe!

The enormous dish, made by food company Toledo Alimentos, weighed in at 1,962.2 kilograms once officially measured, smashing the record of 500 kilograms needed to qualify. A team of chefs and volunteers mixed in 52 different ingredients, including eggs, sausages, corn, peppers and a traditional sauce called caldillo, stirring it all together with giant wooden paddles.

The record-breaking salad was made in a plaza in Guatemala City on 24 October, just ahead of the days Guatemalans traditionally serve fiambre, around 1 and 2 November.

Fiambre is a chilled salad packed with dozens of ingredients, and families across Guatemala have made their own versions for generations. The tradition is said to have started when relatives brought different foods to share at the graves of their ancestors, and ended up mixing them all together into one giant dish.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Susana Reyes said watching the attempt unfold was “an extraordinary experience.” Toledo Alimentos commercial director Juan José Gutierrez Herrarte said the dish was about more than food. “For Toledo, fiambre is much more than a seasonal recipe: it is family, unity, and pride in what is ours,” he said.
