The 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season has started with a numb thrilling matches and unexpected results in just the first round.
In the opening game, the Crusaders made a strong comeback to defeat the Hurricanes 33-25 in Christchurch.
The Crusaders, who had a tough season last year with only four wins, seemed determined to turn things around. After a shaky start—including losing their halfback Noah Hotham to injury and a yellow card for Scott Barrett—they found their rhythm. Replacement Kyle Preston, making his Super Rugby debut, became the hero of the night with three tries, showcasing his speed and skill. Sevu Reece and Will Jordan also impressed, playing key roles in Preston’s success.
The Hurricanes, missing star player Jordie Barrett, started strong with two tries by hooker Jacob Devery but couldn’t maintain their momentum in the second half. The Crusaders’ fired-up forwards and clever play from first-five Taha Kemara helped seal the win.
Other matches over the weekend were just as exciting. The Chiefs upset defending champions Blues 25-14, with Damian McKenzie scoring two tries in a dominant second half.
The Waratahs edged out the Highlanders 37-36 in a nail-biter, while the Brumbies made history as the first Australian team to win in Fiji, beating the Drua 36-32.
In another close match, the Western Force narrowly defeated Moana Pasifika 45-44 with a last-minute try.
