Power returns to Spain and Portugal

Power is mostly back on in Spain and Portugal after a huge blackout that also affected parts of France and Andorra.

About 99% of electricity has been restored in Spain, while over 6 million homes in Portugal now have power again. Officials hope everything will be fully fixed by the end of Tuesday.

The blackout caused major problems. In Spain, a state of emergency was declared. Homes, schools, businesses, trains, traffic lights, and even phone networks stopped working. In Portugal, airports asked people not to travel until things were under control.

Leaders in both countries are working to find out what caused the outage. Spain’s King Felipe has called for a national security meeting, and Portugal’s Prime Minister said there is no sign of a cyber-attack.

Schools were affected too. In Lisbon, Portugal, one teacher said she was “teaching in the dark.” In Madrid, a teacher reported that her school lost power just after lunchtime, but luckily meals had already been served.

Sports were interrupted as well. At the Madrid Open tennis tournament, British player Jacob Fearnley had to leave the court because scoreboards and cameras stopped working.

Some areas, like the Spanish islands of Ibiza, Mallorca, and Menorca, were not affected. In other parts of Portugal, police said traffic lights went out and public transport shut down in cities like Lisbon and Porto.
