At least 68 people have died and dozens more have been hurt after two high-speed trains crashed in central Spain on 28 October 2026.
The crash happened just after 9am, about 140km south of the capital city, Madrid, between the towns of Mora and Orgaz.
One train, run by a private company called Iryo, had stopped on the tracks because of a computer problem, with 147 passengers on board. It was then hit from behind by a train run by Spain’s government-owned rail company, Renfe, which was carrying 397 passengers, so more than 540 people were on the two trains. The force of the crash sent several carriages tumbling down a steep bank.
Spain’s Transport Minister, Óscar Puente, said a computer failure followed by a human mistake caused the crash. He explained that a control centre in Madrid, which takes charge when the system breaks down, told the trains to start moving again without any speed limits.
Dozens of ambulances rushed to the scene, and a helicopter flew the most badly injured people away for treatment.
It is Spain’s deadliest train crash in 13 years, and it comes after another high-speed crash on the same line, near Córdoba, killed 46 people in January.
“The whole of Spain is grieving,” Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said during a visit to the crash site.
Most of Spain’s political parties cancelled their planned campaign events that day.
