As we are just into the second week of the olympics, more Kiwi athlete highlights are coming your way.
Rowing:
New Zealand’s Emma Twigg earned a silver medal in the women’s single sculls rowing event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. At 37 years old, Twigg has competed in five Olympic Games since 2008 and finished her career with 126 international single sculls races for New Zealand. In today’s race, Twigg was the closest competitor to Dutch rower Karolien Florijn, who won gold with a time of 7 minutes 17.28 seconds. Twigg finished second with a time of 7 minutes 19.14 seconds, while Lithuanian Viktorija Senkute took bronze.
Tom Mackintosh finished fifth in the Men’s Single Sculls final with a time of 6:49.62. Oliver Zeidler from Germany took gold, Yauheni Zalaty from AIN won silver, and Simon van Dorp from the Netherlands won bronze.
Swimming:
In swimming, Erika Fairweather finished eighth in the Women’s 800m Freestyle final with a time of 8:23.27. Katie Ledecky from the USA won the gold medal with a time of 8:11.04.
Athletics:
Jacko Gill placed sixth in the Men’s Shot Put final with a best throw of 21.15 meters. His teammate, Tom Walsh, was unable to secure a mark due to an injury. Ryan Crouser from the USA claimed the gold medal with a throw of 22.90 meters. Zoe Hobbs finished sixth in her Women’s 100m semi-final, missing out on a place in the final. Sam Tanner placed 13th in the Men’s 1500m repechage and did not progress to the semi-finals.
Cycling:
In cycling, Corbin Strong finished 27th, and Laurence Pithie 39th in the 273km Men’s Road Race. Remco Evenepoel of Belgium won the gold, with Valentin Madouas and Christophe Laporte of France taking silver and bronze, respectively.
Sailing:
Luuka Jones and Finn Butcher advanced to the heats in the Kayak Cross event. In sailing, Josh Armit narrowly missed the chance to race for a medal in Men’s Windsurfing after finishing fourth in the semi-final. Veerle ten Have did not progress past the Women’s Windsurfing quarter-final. Thomas Saunders is currently fifth in Dinghy racing, while Greta Pilkington is 30th. Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson are in fourth place after three races in the Mixed Multihull.
Golf: In golf, Ryan Fox completed his third round of individual stroke play with a total score of -5, while Dan Hillier finished with +5. In shooting, Chloe Tipple finished the first day of Women’s Skeet Shooting qualifying with scores of 23, 22, and 20 out of 25 in her rounds.
