New Zealand is among 60 countries facing new import taxes from the United States after US President Donald Trump announced plans to introduce double-digit tariffs.
The new 12.5% tariff could affect about 70% of New Zealand’s exports to the US, although important products such as beef and kiwifruit have been excluded.
The US says the tariffs are linked to concerns about goods made using forced labour. American officials believe countries must do more to stop products made with forced labour from being traded.
New Zealand has questioned why it has been included on the list because the country already has laws against slavery, human trafficking and forcing children into work. However, New Zealand does not currently have a specific law banning all imports made with forced labour.
The tariffs could affect New Zealand businesses that sell products to the United States. The Government will need to consider how the new rules may impact trade between the two countries, which have a strong trading relationship.
