The New York Knicks became NBA champions today after beating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals in Texas. It was the Knicks’ first NBA title in 53 years, and they won the series 4-1. Jalen Brunson led New York with 45 points, including 13 points in a row during the fourth quarter.
The Knicks had to fight back once again after falling 16 points behind during the game. This was not unusual for them, as they came back from double-digit deficits in all four of their wins in the series. Brunson said he was amazed and proud, explaining that the team always found a way when people counted them out.
Brunson also set a Knicks record for the most points in an NBA Finals game, passing Willis Reed’s 38 points from 1970. His teammates Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart helped with 27 points between them. The three players are known as part of the “Nova Knicks” because they were all college champions at Villanova.
The Spurs had strong performances too, with Dylan Harper scoring 25 points and Victor Wembanyama adding 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. San Antonio started well and led by as many as 16 points, but New York kept battling. Thousands of Knicks fans had travelled to Texas, making the away game feel like a home celebration.
