Bomb explodes in Japanese Airport

A World War II bomb buried at Miyazaki Airport in Japan unexpectedly exploded, creating a large crater on the taxiway and causing the cancellation of more than 80 flights.

Thankfully, no one was hurt during the blast, and there were no planes nearby when it happened. The explosion took place on Wednesday, and officials later confirmed it was a 500-pound bomb dropped by the U.S. during the war.

The explosion sent pieces of asphalt flying, and videos showed a crater about 7 meters wide and 1 meter deep. The airport, which was built in 1943 as a training site for the Japanese navy, has found other unexploded bombs in the area before. Japan still has many buried bombs from World War II, which are sometimes discovered during construction. The airport hopes to reopen on Thursday.

There will also be a lunchtime session each Thursday where students can share recommendations with others. Pick up a tracker card at the library desk.

At the bottom of the flyer, the library states: “Every book opens a new idea.”
