Apple Maps has changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America for people using the app in the United States. The change follows an order from US President Donald Trump, who asked for the lake to have a new name.
People using Apple Maps in Canada will still see the name Lake Ontario. The lake is shared by the United States and Canada, so the change has attracted plenty of attention.
Google has also changed the name for its users in the United States. The decision has led to lots of discussion online, with people in both countries sharing their views.
Trump’s order told the US Department of the Interior to update the country’s official list of place names. Apple has not yet commented on why it made the change.
The name change comes during a disagreement between the United States and Canada about trade. The United States has put new taxes, called tariffs, on some Canadian goods. Canada has said it will respond with similar taxes on American goods. The two countries have also been having talks about how to improve their trade relationship.
People in Canada have made it clear that they still call the lake Lake Ontario. Ontario has put up a new sign beside the lake saying, “Lake Ontario. Now and Always”. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the sign was a reminder of the lake’s name. For now, if you look at the lake on a map, the name you see may depend on which country you are in.
