Technology company Dyson has launched the CameraJet, an electric toothbrush designed to clean teeth in a new way.
The toothbrush uses a small camera to find gaps between teeth and sprays mouthwash into those spaces. Dyson says the device combines brushing, flossing and mouth-washing in one gadget. It is the company’s first product made for dental hygiene.
The camera near the brush head has 100,000 pixels and takes 28 images every second. An artificial intelligence system studies these images to track the teeth and predict where the gaps are. The system was trained using 470,000 dental images to help it recognise spaces between teeth. Dyson says this could help remove plaque from places that people often miss when cleaning their teeth.
The mouthwash is stored in a small, transparent tank holding 12.5 millilitres. A special pump keeps the liquid under pressure, allowing it to spray even when the toothbrush is held upside down. Dyson says the tank can be refilled in about three seconds using a docking station. The company has also created Ginger Mint and Spearmint toothpaste, which does not foam so it will not block the camera.
Dyson says it spent more than a decade researching how people clean their teeth before developing the CameraJet.
Founder James Dyson said the company wanted to find a simpler way to clean the gaps where plaque can build up. Dyson is best known for making vacuum cleaners, but it has also developed products such as headphones.
