Lionel Messi broke the World Cup scoring record as Argentina beat Austria 2-0 and reached the knockout stage. Messi scored his 17th and 18th World Cup goals in the match. His first goal came in the 38th minute, after he had missed a penalty earlier in the game. His second goal came in injury time, moving him two goals ahead of Germany’s Miroslav Klose.
The match took place two days before Messi’s 39th birthday. It was also the sixth World Cup match in a row in which he had scored. Messi had equalled Klose’s record of 16 goals in Argentina’s earlier 3-0 win over Algeria. That match was special because it was also Messi’s 200th international appearance.
Messi is playing in his sixth World Cup and has now appeared in a record 28 matches at the tournament. Klose played 24 World Cup matches for Germany and won the 2014 final against Argentina.
