A huge sea lion nicknamed Chonkers has become a surprise attraction in San Francisco. He appeared at Pier 39 about a month ago and has been resting, barking and napping on the busy waterfront. Visitors from across the United States have travelled to see the 1,000kg animal. His unusual appearance has made him a local celebrity.
Chonkers is not the type of sea lion usually seen in the area. Most sea lions at Pier 39 are Californian sea lions, but Chonkers is a Steller sea lion. These animals are usually found in colder waters near Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. This makes his visit to San Francisco Bay quite rare.
Experts say Chonkers is especially noticeable because of his size. Claire Cook, from the Aquarium of the Bay, said it is unusual to see Steller sea lions so far south. She also explained that they normally spend time with other Steller sea lions. Chonkers is one of at least two Steller sea lions spotted among the smaller California sea lions this month.
Even though Chonkers is already very large, experts think he may not be fully grown yet. He could still gain around 100kg as he grows. A fully grown male Steller sea lion can be more than three metres long and weigh over 1,100kg.
