An Australian man has become the world’s oldest first-time grandfather, according to Guinness World Records. Charles Smith was 91 years and 209 days old when his granddaughter, Isla, was born. The record was announced on 14 April 2026.

Mr Smith’s granddaughter was born to his son Ashley and daughter-in-law Hanna. Charles was already 55 years old when Ashley was born, making the family story unusual. Guinness World Records officially recognised him for the achievement.

Mr Smith said he felt an instant connection with baby Isla. He said that when he picked her up, he did not want to give her back, apart from when it was time to change her nappy. His comment showed the joy he felt at becoming a grandfather for the first time.

Ashley said his father is impressive for many reasons beyond the record. He said Charles is very independent and enjoys retirement by travelling around Australia in his camper van. He also spends time boating around Moreton Bay.

Ashley added that age has not slowed his father down at all. He said Charles stays active, keeps a positive attitude and has a strong group of friends. He even joked that the large amount of tea his father drinks might help keep him going. The record has made Charles famous, but his family says his energy and cheerful spirit are what make him truly special.
