Tim Southee has stepped down as the captain of New Zealand’s Test cricket team, with Tom Latham set to replace him for the upcoming tour of India.
The 35-year-old fast bowler announced his decision, saying it was “best for the team” as he focuses on improving his own performance on the field.
Southee became the Black Caps Test captain in December 2022, leading the team in 14 matches, including six wins and six losses. He has played 102 Test matches for New Zealand, taking 382 wickets, making him second only to Sir Richard Hadlee in New Zealand’s all-time wicket-takers list.
Southee will remain in the team as a player and will continue to support his teammates, particularly the younger bowlers. Black Caps coach Gary Stead and New Zealand Cricket CEO Scott Weenink praised Southee for his leadership and selflessness, highlighting his dedication to the team’s success.
The Black Caps’ next challenge will be a three-Test series in India, starting soon, with Latham taking over as captain.
