The Wellington Phoenix have lost 2-0 to Adelaide United in an elimination final, ending their A-League season. Adelaide captain Craig Goodwin scored both goals for the home side, taking advantage of mistakes made by Wellington.

The Phoenix only managed two shots on target in the match and fell at the first playoff hurdle for the fourth time in the past five seasons.

It was also the last match in charge for head coach Ufuk Talay, who expressed disappointment in the team’s performance. However, Talay believes that he is leaving the club in good hands, with assistant coach Giancarlo Italiano set to take over next season.

Talay named the same XI that started last week’s match against Macarthur FC. Despite the loss, Talay believes that the club is heading in the right direction and is in a fantastic place moving forward.
