Wānaka has McDonald’s Debate

This week, the Queenstown Lakes District Council is listening to submissions about a proposal to open a McDonald’s in Wānaka.

The fast-food chain wants to build a 455-square-meter restaurant with a 24/7 drive-thru along the Wānaka-Luggate Highway. However, the plan has sparked strong opposition among locals.

Out of 366 submissions received, 339 were against the proposal, with only 21 in favour and six suggesting changes. Sophie Ward, a representative from Wastebusters and Plastic Free Wānaka, voiced environmental concerns about the restaurant’s reliance on single-use packaging, which could increase litter and waste. She explained that McDonald’s does not align with Wānaka’s commitment to sustainability and zero-waste values.

Over 6,000 people have signed a petition to block the project. Ward also highlighted the proposed site’s importance to the community, saying it sits near the base of Mount Iron, a much-loved natural landmark. Locals worry that the restaurant could disrupt the town’s aesthetic and natural beauty.

While opponents are not entirely against McDonald’s coming to Wānaka, they want the company to adapt to the community’s environmental principles. Ward noted that McDonald’s chose to follow the formal process instead of early engagement but expressed hope for future discussions based on the council’s decision.
