The UK recorded its hottest June day for the third day in a row on Friday. The Met Office said temperatures provisionally reached 36.9C in Wattisham, Suffolk. It was also the hottest day of 2026 so far.

The heat affected schools and communities across the country. Some schools closed their doors because of the very hot weather. A rare red weather warning remained in place for London and parts of south-eastern England until Friday night.

The Met Office said temperatures were still rising in some areas. Storms were also forecast, with warnings about possible flash flooding. This meant people were being told to take care in both extreme heat and sudden heavy rain.

Wales recorded its hottest June day on Thursday when temperatures reached 35.9C in Bute Park, Cardiff. That beat the previous Welsh June record of 33.7C, set in Powys in 2000. Northern Ireland also recorded its joint hottest June day and its hottest June day in 50 years. Scotland recorded its hottest day of 2026 during the same week.

On Saturday morning, a group of students from a Wellington intermediate school collected rubbish from a local beach. They worked for two hours and filled six large bags. The organiser said the clean-up helped protect seabirds and made the beach safer for visitors. Some students noticed many plastic bottles and food wrappers near the rocks. One student commented that the beach looked much better after the clean-up. Another said the event was tiring but worth the effort. The group planned to return next month and continue the work.
