New Smart Spoon Makes Food Taste Better

A Japanese tech company called Kirin Holdings has created a new spoon that can make food taste better. This special spoon, named Elecispoon, helps food taste saltier without adding more salt. It works by using electricity to change how our taste buds perceive saltiness.

Kirin Holdings first began working on this technology with scientists from Meiji University a few years ago. They experimented with smart kitchen tools like spoons and bowls to make food taste about 1.5 times saltier. Now, they have released the Elecispoon for people to use at home.

The Elecispoon aims to help people eat less salt, which is important because eating too much salt can cause health problems. Many people in Japan find low-salt foods less tasty, making it hard to cut down on salt. The Elecispoon solves this by using a special electrical current to make food taste saltier.

Here’s how it works: the tip of the spoon transfers a tiny electric charge to the food, creating an electric field around the tongue. This makes the sodium ions in the food come together, so the food tastes saltier.

To suit different tastes, the Elecispoon has four settings for the electricity level. Users can start with the lowest setting, and even the highest setting won’t cause a tingling sensation. The spoon is powered by a 3V rechargeable lithium battery in its handle.
