A brand-new apple variety grown here in New Zealand, called Joli, has gone on sale overseas for the very first time, launching in Vietnam this month.
The apple was developed by New Zealand company T&G Global, which spent more than ten years breeding the new variety. Joli is now being grown on 273 hectares of orchards around New Zealand.
Vietnam was chosen as the very first country in the world to sell Joli apples, with the fruit now on shelves at WinMart and WinMart+ supermarkets.
Shane Kingston, T&G’s Managing Director of Apples, said the choice was part of a bigger plan. “The decision to choose Vietnam as the global launch market for Joli forms part of the company’s strategy to expand exports to Asia,” Kingston said.
Joli joins two other apple varieties already grown by the same company: Envy, a popular apple for eating on its own, and Jazz, often eaten as a snack. Joli has been designed especially for whānau to share.
T&G hopes to eventually grow Joli on about 1500 hectares of orchards around the world by 2035. Premium apples like these are becoming big business — experts predict the worldwide market will grow from about US$13 billion in 2025 to US$19 billion by 2030.
It’s an exciting moment for New Zealand growers, and a sign that more Kiwi-grown fruit could soon be reaching shoppers all over the world.
