The Football Ferns have suffered a disappointing loss in their Group A match against the Philippines at Wellington Regional Stadium.

The Philippines took the lead with a goal by Sarina Bolden in the 23rd minute, and despite creating several opportunities, the Ferns were unable to score.

Prior to the match, the Ferns were eager to secure a victory to advance to the knockout stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, building on their historic win against Norway in Auckland.

No New Zealand football team, men’s or women’s, has ever reached the knockout section of a World Cup.

New Zealand is ranked 20 places higher in the world than the Philippines, who previously lost 0-2 to Switzerland in their tournament opener.

The Football Ferns’ last group game will be against Switzerland in Dunedin on Sunday.
