Dogs surf in Florida

On Sunday, April 1, in Cocoa Beach, Florida, 23 dogs rode the waves in the 13th annual East Coast Dog Surfing Festival.

The event took place at Lori Wilson Park and was watched by about 5,000 people and dozens of other dogs. The festival is organised by the Brevard Humane Society each Easter.

One of the biggest stars was Sammie, a small dog called a “chiweenie”—a mix between a chihuahua and a dachshund. Sammie surfed so well that he won first place again, keeping his title as the top surfing dog of 2024.

Theresa Clifton from the Humane Society said that many of the dogs seem to truly enjoy surfing, just like humans do. The festival helps people see pets as fun and loving family members.

The event also included a dog bikini contest and a competition for best Easter costume. The Ron Jon Surf Shop helped sponsor the festival, making it both a fun and furry way to celebrate the holiday.
