New Zealand swimmer Lewis Clareburt has won his second gold medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The 27-year-old took first place in the men’s 400m individual medley with a time of 4 minutes 8.72 seconds. He finished more than two seconds ahead of Australia’s Will Petric. The race took place in Glasgow, where Clareburt successfully defended the title he also won in Birmingham four years earlier.
Just one day before, Clareburt had also won the 200m butterfly. His latest victory means New Zealand now has 10 medals at the Games, including two gold, five silver and three bronze. Clareburt said he enjoyed the race and was happy to win another gold medal.
Although he did not beat the Games record he set four years ago, Clareburt stayed positive. He said he was close to the time he wanted and believes he can improve even more in the future. He plans to learn from the race and fix small mistakes to become even stronger.
Earlier in the Games, New Zealand weightlifter Cameron McTaggart also celebrated success by winning a silver medal in the men’s 88kg event. New Zealand’s athletes have made a strong start to the Commonwealth Games with medals in both swimming and weightlifting.
