The Glasgow Commonwealth Games came to an end on Sunday with a colourful closing ceremony at the OVO Hydro, just hours after the Silver Ferns had won netball gold over Jamaica. Around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations had taken part in the eleven-day event, which featured performances from Scottish and international musicians.

New Zealand finished the Games with 10 gold medals, 14 silver and 12 bronze, placing sixth on the medal table behind Australia, England, Canada, India and host nation Scotland. This was fewer medals than New Zealand won at the Birmingham Games four years ago, but this year’s event featured half as many sports, and New Zealand’s team was also smaller than in previous years.

The closing ceremony included singers Sandi Thom and Delta Goodrem, as well as performers from Scotland and India, celebrating the achievements of the athletes and the spirit of the Commonwealth. Delta Goodrem said closing ceremonies were always special, as they brought together everyone who had contributed to the Games, from athletes to fans.

Although the future of the Commonwealth Games has faced some uncertainty in recent years, the next Games are already planned for Ahmedabad, India, in 2030. New Zealand is also considering whether it might host the Games again sometime in the future.

In a Year 8 classroom, students researched local histories and shared stories from their own whānau. One group interviewed kaumātua about changes to the river over time. Another group collected photographs and maps showing how the town had grown. The teacher explained that learning was stronger when students connected new information to familiar places and experiences. At the end of the week, the class displayed their findings on a wall chart and wrote short reflections about what they had learned.
