Thieves Steal $1.69 Million in Pokémon Cards

Thieves have stolen Pokémon and sports trading cards worth at least NZ$1.69 million from a delivery truck in California, in the United States.

The FedEx truck was broken into on 13 October while it was parked near Professional Sports Authenticator, also known as PSA, in the city of Santa Ana. PSA is a company that checks whether cards, autographs and comic books are real, then gives them a grade, or score, based on what condition they’re in.

Natalie Garcia, from the Santa Ana Police Department, said the driver had left the truck unattended. The truck’s lock was missing, and two pallets (large flat platforms used for stacking boxes) had been taken.

Police say the exact value of the stolen cards still hasn’t been worked out. Nick Andrews, a card collector near Boston, said he had heard from at least two dozen people who had lost cards, and he believed the total could be “millions of dollars”.

PSA’s parent company, Collectors, has cancelled the official certificates for the stolen cards, which prove a card is genuine. It has also warned places where cards are bought and sold to keep an eye out for them.

The company has contacted the owners and arranged to pay them what their cards were worth. FedEx and Collectors are both working with police on the investigation.

He kamupene a PSA e tirotiro ana mēnā he tūturu ngā kāri, ngā waitohu me ngā pukapuka pakiwaituhi, kātahi ka hoatu he kōeke, he kaute rānei, e ai ki te pai o tō rātou āhua.

Kua whakatūpato hoki i ngā wāhi e hokona ai ngā kāri kia mataara mō aua kāri.

Kei te mahi tahi a FedEx me Collectors me ngā pirihimana i te tūhuratanga.
