Huge Flood hits Nepal-China Border

A massive flash flood has hit the border between Nepal and China, killing at least 95 people and leaving hundreds missing.

The disaster struck on Wednesday after an earthquake caused a large landslide that blocked the Bhote Koshi River. Water then rushed downstream from China into Nepal, flooding villages and damaging areas near the border. Hundreds of tourists, including people from other countries, are among those reported missing.

Rescue teams have been using helicopters to save people who became trapped on rooftops. In China, more than 250 people are reported missing, while a mudslide also struck the Gyirong port. A helicopter pilot who saw the flood said the waves were about five to six metres high. He reported seeing large trees and vehicles being carried away by the powerful water.

The flood has caused serious damage in the Himalayan region, where rising temperatures are also affecting glaciers. Scientists say climate change can increase the risks linked to melting glaciers and unstable mountain areas. New Zealand officials are contacting authorities in Nepal to find out whether any New Zealanders have been affected. New Zealanders in Nepal have been told to follow instructions from local authorities, including evacuation orders.

Rescue workers are continuing to search for missing people and help those affected by the disaster. The number of people killed or missing could change as rescue teams reach more areas. The disaster shows how quickly floods and landslides can become dangerous in mountainous regions.
