Cat sets record with 29 toes

A cat in the American state of Wisconsin has broken the Guinness World Record for the most toes ever recorded on a cat — an incredible 29 toes in total.

The cat, a Maine coon named Erebus Anomaly, is owned by Kendra Vandenbloomer and Hunter Nett, who run a cat breeding business. Most cats have 18 toes altogether, so Erebus has 11 extra.

His extra toes are caused by a genetic trait called polydactyly, which is fairly common in Maine coon cats but had never been recorded at such an extreme level before. His owners suspected they might have a record-breaker on their hands not long after he was born.

The previous record of 28 toes was set by a Canadian cat named Jake back in 2002 and stood for more than two decades until a kitten from Michigan named Toby equalled it earlier this year. Erebus has now gone one better, claiming the title for himself.

Maine coon cats are one of the biggest pedigree cat breeds around, known for their bushy tails and friendly personalities. Despite his unusual paws, Erebus is said to be a happy, healthy cat with a few more toes to keep clean than most.
