A cat that went missing from a Cambridge property around a year ago was discovered living on a North Canterbury farm 630 kilometres away, after a microchip scan reunited her with her owner.
The tortoiseshell cat had been wandering around Lee Henderson’s property near Amberley for some time before Henderson took her to the vet to be scanned.
The microchip revealed the cat, originally named Mum Cat, belonged to Georgia Nugent-O’Leary, who lived near Lake Karapiro in Waikato and had lost track of her more than a year earlier. Nugent-O’Leary said she had almost given up hope of ever finding her cat again, and described the phone call telling her the cat had turned up safe as one of the strangest and happiest moments of her life.
Exactly how the cat travelled such a huge distance remained a mystery, though the two women guessed she may have hitched a ride on a delivery truck or even a rowing trailer. Since Nugent-O’Leary already cared for several other cats and the tortoiseshell had settled happily into farm life, the pair agreed she should stay in Canterbury for good. Henderson renamed her Goldie, saying the cat had brought a golden moment of luck into her life.
